Two students were killed after a shooting at Starts Right Here, a Des Moines charter school, Iowa; while a third victim, a school employee, is in serious condition.
Des Moines Public Schools Acting Superintendent Matt Smith said in a statement: “We are still awaiting further details, but our thoughts are with the victims of this incident and their families and friends. Starts Right Here is a valued partner for DMPS, doing important work to help us re-engage students, and we stand ready to support them during this critical time.”

Mike Beranek, president of the Iowa State Education Association, said in a statement, “We engage our elected leaders to consider effective strategies to end gun violence and find concrete solutions that keep our students, educators, and communities safe. Our schools must be bastions of safety, not recipients of violence. This must end. As a nation, we must recognize that this is a social problem that seeps into our schools.”
Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds said in a statement that she is “shocked and saddened… My heart breaks for them, these children and their families.”
WhileAbout 20 minutes after the shooting, police said officers stopped a car about two miles away with three people aboard.as reported by the chain NBC .
The shooting occurred at an educational program called Starts Right Here that is affiliated with the Des Moines school district. The program, which helps at-risk youth, was founded by Will Holmes, a rapper who goes by the stage name Will Keeps.
