A survivor of the shooting that occurred Saturday night in Monterey Park testified that her dance partner was shot in the back when she was trying to protect her at the moment the attack happened.
The woman, who identified herself as Shally, was dancing with an old friend and dance partner at the time the armed suspect entered the Star Ballroom Dance Studio and began shooting.

Shally remembered that she took her dance partner and they tried to hide under a table, but her 62-year-old friend, whom she did not want to identify, was shot in the back and saved while the shooting was taking place.
The survivor mentioned that, when the assailant escaped from the place, she tried to wake up her dance partner, but realized that she was injured from a shot to the back.
Shally said that for a moment he thought the terror was over after the first shots were fired, but the suspect had only come out to reload his gun.
By the time the shooting finally ended, two of his friends had died and others were injured by the shots.
Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna reported that five women and five men died as a result of the shooting at the ballroom in Monterey Park. Without giving exact ages, the sheriff said Sunday afternoon that they all appeared to be in their 50s.
Another 10 people were injured by the bullets and on Sunday afternoon it was reported that seven of them remained hospitalized.
