Pope Francis asked this Sunday (01.22.2023) to pray for the cessation of “acts of violence in Peru”plunged into a deep political crisis due to protests against the government that so far have left at least 60 dead.
“I join the Peruvian bishops in saying ‘no to violence, wherever it comes from, no more deaths’“said the Supreme Pontiff, pronouncing the last part of this sentence in Spanish. “Violence extinguishes the hope of finding a just solution to the problems,” he added.
The wave of protests to demand the resignation of Peruvian President Dina Boluarte has been going on since the beginning of December, which led the government to impose a state of emergency in some areas.
The protests began after the removal and detention of former President Pedro Castillo on December 7after he tried to dissolve Congress, which was about to remove him from power due to numerous allegations of corruption.
“I encourage all the parties involved to embark on the path of dialogue between brothers of the same nation, in full respect for human rights and the rule of law,” the pope exclaimed.
