Guatemalan authorities captured a drug trafficker linked to a criminal network that operates on the border with Honduras to move drugs to Mexico.
During an operation carried out in the province of Izabal, he was located Luis Alberto Chacon Alvaradoalias “Wicho Veneno”, who is accused of illicit association and conspiracy for drug trafficking, according to the Public Ministry.
According to the Prensa Libre site, this criminal had already been arrested in 2013 and sentenced to three years in prison for drug trafficking and illicit association.
The investigation by the Prosecutor’s Office indicates that the detainee was engaged in receiving drug shipments in Honduras from South America and later moved them through western Guatemala to deliver them to Mexico.
Local media reported that Chacón’s network is linked to drug trafficker Mario Ponce Rodríguez, imprisoned in the United States since 2012 after being convicted of conspiring to distribute 9,000 kilos of cocaine in that country. Ponce carried out the transfer of drugs to the United States through Mexico.
Official data consulted by the Efe agency reveal that in 2022, 27 alleged drug traffickers were arrested in Guatemala at the request of the United States, while cocaine seizures decreased by 53% compared to 2021.
Due to its geographical position, Guatemala is used as a bridge where at least 90% of the drugs coming mainly from South America are stored and distributed. with the aim of reaching the United States, according to different analysis centers.
