The Unione Sportiva Salernitana 1919 decided this Monday to do without the services of its coach, the Italian Davide Nicola after the win conceded last Sunday against Atalanta, in a match where the Mexican goalkeeper Guillermo ‘Memo’ Ochoa conceded eight goals.
The Italian club announced through a statement the dismissal of the strategist. “Salernitana 1919 communicates that it has relieved Davide Nicola of his position as coach. The team thanks the coach for the passion and dedication to work shown, the deep commitment to reach the historic goal of salvation in Serie A and wishes him the best of professional luck for the continuation of his career”, wrote the Salerno team , south of Italy.
This decision comes after the defeat against Atalanta by a score of 8-2 and that leaves them a few points from relegation. It also occurs in the midst of the adaptation process for Ochoa, who arrived in Italy at the beginning of January from Club América in Mexico.
The goalkeeper has stood out with great saves, but he has not been able to lower the high quota of goals conceded by Salernitana. In just three games played by the Mexican, he has conceded 11 goals.
Before the crushing defeat he suffered, the biggest win received by Guillermo Ochoa in Europe had been on October 15, 2016 with Granada when Atlético de Madrid scored against him seven times.
Davide Nicola is 49 years old and had arrived at the position of technical director less than a year ago. His main mission was to save the team from relegation, something he miraculously achieved on the last day of the championship. Hand in hand with him, the team managed to get rid of the fall to the second division for the first time.
Currently the squad is in the 16th position with 18 points, nine from relegation, but with a complicated dynamic since they have not won since October 30. Sunday’s win was the straw that broke the camel’s back.
Salernitana has played in Serie A three times. The first in the 1947-48 campaign, the second in 1998-1999 and the third in 2021-22, although this one has the particularity, thanks to Nicola, who is the only one in the that they have done it without being recently promoted.
