In the first instance, the exercise used to gauge voter opinion showed that Republicans approved of his performance as minority leader during the Biden administration while he held that position.

In this sense, McCarthy now in his new position he has the approval of 59% of Republicans, while 21% disapprove and 20% are not sure.

On his performance in the long term, 44% of Republicans trust him to be effective in his position; while only 19% of Democrats agree, as well as 15% of independents.

The uncomfortable point for some of Kevin McCarthy’s coreligionists is that, during the weeks leading up to the vote in the House of Representatives, the 57-year-old politician negotiated with those who opposed his candidacy and to convince them to cast their ballots he gave them numerous concessions, including commitments to launch committees to investigate the Biden administration in various areas.

Hence, the YouGov poll found that Republicans were split, 34% to 34%, over whether McCarthy’s opponents were voting against him to give themselves more power or because they had serious concerns about the politician he would eventually replace. the charge to the fierce Nancy Pelossi.

For their part, the data shows that the independents were also very divided; while the Democrats expressed that they believed that the opposition of the detractors was aimed at gaining power.
