The Honduran government decreed this Saturday (01.14.2023) a “sanitary emergency” for 90 daysafter detecting avian influenza in pelicans located on the Caribbean coast, recorded a decree published in the Official Gazette.
ANDl emergency period, which may be extended according to the epidemiological evolutionwas determined “in order to prevent, control and eliminate the presence of highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza in domestic and wild birds,” the decree specifies.
The decision was made by the government.upon confirmation of the presence in the national territory of avian influenza detected in wild aquatic birds identified as brown pelicans on the beach of the city of La Ceiba”, in the Caribbean, about 300 km from Tegucigalpa.
The authorities had reported two outbreaks of H5N1 avian influenza infection at the beginning of January after locating more than thirty dead pelicans.
The Honduran government asks the population to maintain and strengthen prevention actionscontrol and epidemiological surveillance of early detection” with the aim of “eliminating the focus and preventing its spread to other geographical areas of the country”.
