Ten immigrants have entered the United States this week under the new immigration program which was announced by President Joe Biden a few days ago and which will allow up to 30,000 Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans and Venezuelans with US financial sponsors to fly to the United States each month.
The first arrivals of immigrants under this program occurred on Tuesday, five days after the US began accepting applications for it.
This is an expansion of a similar immigration policy launched exclusively for Venezuelans that began in October and has led to a dramatic decrease in the number of Venezuelans trying to enter the United States illegally, according to the administration.
Another 600 authorized immigrants
More than 600 additional immigrants from these four crisis-affected countries had been screened and approved to come to the United States legally. through Friday, according to unpublished government data. The US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has also received thousands of applications from potential sponsors.
Those prosecuted under the sponsorship initiative will be granted parole, an immigration status that allows them to legally enter, live and work in the United States for humanitarian or public interest reasons. The Biden administration has used that same authority to resettle tens of thousands of Ukrainian and Afghan refugees.
Data on arrivals and approved cases show that the Biden administration has moved quickly to launch an unprecedented program that it believes will be key to managing land migration along the US-Mexico border.
The expanded sponsorship program is part of a new strategy that the Biden administration hopes will significantly reduce illegal border crossings by combining expanded legal migration channels with tougher enforcement measures for those who enter the country without legal permission.
A new process was also unveiled that will allow asylum seekers to use a mobile app to request an appointment to appear at a port of entry to request permission to enter the United States. The process began Thursday, and first port of entry appointments are scheduled for January 18.
Illegal border crossings have dropped dramatically since the measures were announceds, a senior Department of Homeland Security (DHS) official told CBS News, requesting anonymity to describe the internal data.
US border agents are averaging 4,000 migrant apprehensions a day, down from the daily average of 7,000 in November, the official told CBS News.
