The president of United States Joe BidenThe president of Mexico Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador and the Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau met this Tuesday in Mexico City at the X Summit of North American Leaders to discuss issues of immigration, trade, drug trafficking and climate change.
Biden said in a statement that the leaders’ meeting also made the supply chains of the three countries more resilient, the countries more secure and their economies more competitive.
At a press conference, the leaders of the three countries announced the agreements they reached.
New measures to reduce border crossings by undocumented immigrants
Biden, thanked his Mexican counterpart, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, on Tuesday for receiving the undocumented immigrants who do not follow the steps established in the new immigration policy announced last week, that will receive up to 30,000 Nicaraguans, Cubans, Haitians and Venezuelans per month in the United States.
“I want to thank you, Mr. President, for stepping up and receiving into Mexico those who do not follow the legal paths that we have established, instead of trying to cross the border between our countries,” Biden said.
The US president acknowledged that migrants make a “long journey” to reach the border and are victims of organized crime and physical harm. “We want to make it easier for people to come but not go through this terrible process.”
The immigration changes include the expansion of Title 42 to immigrants from the aforementioned countries, since the application for immigration protection must be requested through the “CBP One” application, not directly at the border.
That program could be expanded to more countries, according to National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan.
Biden promised that they will continue to work on addressing causes to encourage people to stay in their countries of origin.for which he asked the US Congress for $4,000 million dollars to support this initiative, while Vice President Kamala Harris seeks to raise another $3,000 million dollars in private donations.
AMLO applauded the new measures of the United States to extend the use of Title 42 and the expansion of the immigration program with new rules applied to immigrants from Venezuela extended to other countries with high volumes of migration.
The president of Mexico said that sYour country will not build a center to accommodate the thousands of migrants that the United States is expelling under their new rules for asylum at the common border, as previously reported.
“We don’t plan to build any centers in the southeast for migration. What we do is help migrants with shelters, medical care and food,” said the president, commenting on the help that the United States would provide to Mexico, after learning that the country will accept thousands of migrants returned from the border.
AMLO also reported at the press conference that he asked President Joe Biden to intercede with Congress to regularize the status of millions of Mexican immigrants in the US.
Digital platform to avoid dangerous journeys for immigrants
The Biden Administration plans to announce this Tuesday the development of a virtual platform that will serve as a one-stop shop for migrants to find information about the legal pathways they might be eligible to immigrate to, whether to the US, Mexico or Canada.
“This will give people who are thinking of immigrating the information they need to come to Mexico, the United States and Canada legally, making them less likely to become dependent on traffickers who lie about current border restrictions and risk their lives. at risk,” the White House said in a statement.
Before the summit, the United States enabled the application CBP One like a new mechanism for immigrants to schedule appointments to appear at ports of entryfacilitating safe and orderly arrivals, to be used initially for those seeking an exception to the Title 42 public health order.
Mexico vows to crack down on fentanyl trafficking
AMLO promised the United States and Canada stop fentanyl trafficking through the work of the Armed Forces, which he put in charge of port and customs control, and the destruction of the laboratories where the drug is made.
