The mayor of the city of NY, Eric Adams, and the Mayor of ChicagoLori Lightfoot demanded Saturday that the governor of ColoradoJared Polis, stop busing the undocumented immigrants applicants for asylum to their cities, saying they are “over capacity,” according to Politico.
“We respectfully demand that you cease and desist sending immigrants to New York City and Chicago,” Adams and Lightfoot wrote in a letter to Polis. “Since December 2022, Chicago and New York City have welcomed hundreds of people from Colorado.”
The influx of asylum seekers crossing the southern border intensified at the end of the year as a Trump-era policy known as the Title 42. The Supreme Court, however, blocked that expiration in a ruling last week.
Lightfoot and Adams are asking Colorado Governor Jared Polis to partner with Chicago and New York to advocate for federal solutions to the nation’s current challenges surrounding asylum seekers.
Since August 31, Chicago has seen 3,854 asylum seekers arrive from Texas and other statesincluding Colorado, according to the letter. New York City has seen 36,400 asylum seekers arrive since January 4says the letter.
“You must stop busing immigrants to Chicago and New York City,” the mayors wrote. “In the case of family reunification, let’s work together to ensure that people reconnect with their loved ones; however, sending migrants to our cities whose systems are overcapacity, where they may have difficulty finding shelter and other services, is wrong and further victimizes these most vulnerable people.”
