The United States government was this Friday “grateful” for the arrest in Mexico of the drug dealer Ovid Guzman Lopezone of the sons of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman most wanted by US authorities.

White House Security Council spokesman John Kirbyindicated in a press conference that “this is not an insignificant achievement on the part of the Mexican authorities.”

“We’re certainly grateful for that,” Kirby said, responding to a question from a reporter about whether the Joe Biden administration would like to see any concrete action from Mexico to stop fentanyl production and smuggling.

Kirby said he did not want to get ahead of next week’s summit in Mexico between Biden, his Mexican counterpart, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, although he assured that they will talk “a lot” about this issue.

And he stressed that Mexico has already taken “significant steps” to combat drug trafficking such as the arrest of Ovidio Guzmán.

Biden plans to travel to the neighboring country next week to meet with López Obrador and Trudeau, on his first visit to Mexico and Latin America.

The arrest of Ovidio Guzmán occurred early Thursday morning in an operation involving members of the National Army, the National Guard and other security institutions and was the result of six months of work, according to the Mexican government.

After his capture in Sinaloa, the Mexican Armed Forces transferred the son of “El Chapo” to the Mexican capital and made him available to the federal Public Ministry agent to determine his legal situation.

This Friday, a Mexican federal judge froze the extradition to the United States of Ovidio Guzmán.
