The capture of Ovidio Guzmán, aka “El Ratón”represented a resounding blow to the Sinaloa cartel and one more success of the Mexican government in the fight against organized crime.

After a violent day in Culiacán, Sinaloa, the son of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman He already sleeps in a cell at the Altiplano prison, that is, the same prison where, years ago, his father escaped through a tunnel.

Now, the next step is to carry out the corresponding judicial process, and attend Ovid’s extradition request that the United States government processed in September 2019.

Nevertheless, everything seems to indicate that “El Raton” will not face US justice in a short timeas Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard implied, when he pointed out that his extradition will not take place immediately.

“There is a procedure that must be followed according to Mexican law. It would have to appear today before the authorities. We could not extradite him or proceed to extradite him under these circumstances today, or tomorrow, or the day after. Could not. We have to comply with the formalities that the law imposes on us,” said the official.

When asked if the arrest of the young drug dealer was a “gift” for US President Joe Bidenwho will come to Mexico next week for the X Summit of North American Leaders, Ebrard rejected that hypothesis.

“They have nothing to do with it, because this operation was kept secret by the authorities in charge of doing it and there was no political cabinet consultation. So, there is no relationship between the political operation and the Summit. Otherwise, it would be clear that it would be. There is not some kind of exchange”, commented the chancellor.

In addition, denied that US agents were involved in Ovidio’s capture. “So there is an extradition request and there is no participation, as far as I know, of any foreign agent in our territory,” he said.
