General Motors’ Super Cruise system is a Level 3 autonomous driving technology found in select Cadillac models. This means that the system can take control of driving under certain conditions, but the driver must still be attentive and ready to take control at any time.

Super Cruise uses a combination of sensors and navigation technology to monitor the vehicle’s environment and keep it in its lane. This includes rear and front view cameras, radar, and lidar (a sensor that uses lasers to measure distance). In addition, the system also connects to high-definition maps and real-time traffic information for a more comprehensive view of the vehicle’s surroundings.

When the Super Cruise system is activated, a green light appears on the vehicle’s dash to indicate that the system is ready to take over. The driver still needs to keep their hands on the wheel and be alert, as the system can ask them to take control at any time.

If the driver becomes distracted or inattentive, the Super Cruise system uses a fatigue and distraction detection system to ensure the driver is alert. This includes a camera that monitors the angle of the driver’s head and a series of sensors that detect muscle activity and the driver’s level of attention. If the system detects that the driver is distracted or fatigued, it issues a series of visual and audible alerts prompting the driver to take control of the vehicle.

In short, General Motors’ Super Cruise system is a Level 3 autonomous driving technology that uses a combination of sensors and navigation technology to monitor the vehicle’s environment and keep it in its lane. The driver must still be alert and ready to take control at any time, and the system uses a series of alerts to make sure the driver is paying attention.
