The New York City Department of Education reported that it has blocked access to ChatGPT from all devices connected to its network.. The measure seeks to prevent students from accessing the chatbot to carry out their school activities.
Jenna Lyle, a spokeswoman for the city’s Department of Education, explained that the blockade is due to the fact that consider that the chatbot could have a negative impact on the education of students. For this reason, they considered that the best course of action was to prevent them from accessing the platform, developed by the OpenAI company, from the computers of educational institutions.
“While the tool can provide quick and easy answers to questions, it doesn’t build critical thinking and problem-solving skills, which are essential for academic and lifelong success,” Lyle said.
It is not surprising the position assumed by the educational authorities taking into account that since its launch in November 2021, the impact that ChatGPT was having in the educational field has been pointed outby allowing students to use it to complete assignments in a matter of secondsyes. This is because a good number of young people discovered that thanks to Artificial Intelligence (AI), they could ask the chatbot to write their assignments and essays.
The problem with this situation lies in the fact that, according to experts, ChatGPT is so advanced that it would be practically impossible for teachers to be able to differentiate between the texts written by their students and those made by the machine.
although currently there are some initiatives that promise to be able to scan texts to find out if they were written using an AI or by a personthe truth is that they are still in the initial stages.
Something that the Department of Education did not refer to is the fact that they plan to implement some type of system that helps teachers to detect, if any, works created with ChatGPT.
To this is added that although students will not be able to access the chatbot from the computers of the educational centers, nothing prevents them from being able to do it from their own computers at home, or even from their cell phones.
