The next generation of electric vehicles has the power units that will give strength to sustainable mobility, since in 2021 General Motors (GM) revealed a family of three engines that work under the ultium platform together with software specially designed to extract the maximum possible potential.
Said engines reach the automotive market after 20 years of development and investigations yes! two decades of intense studies, programs and tests to come up with this option revealed by the American company. Each one of them shares a series of principles, tools and manufacturing methods, although they are listed with scalable features.
The motors have the capacity to offer up to 50% less mass and volume with a 25% greater capacity compared to the rest thanks to the fact that the electronic components, inverter, power and load modules are not outside the transmission units as GM is currently accustomed, because now they will be integrated in order to offer the recently described benefits.
“20 years of electric powertrain development and more than 100 years of high-volume vehicle engineering are helping GM rapidly shift from conventional vehicles to electric vehicles. Our vertical integration in this space, which encompasses both hardware and software, helps us to have control over our own destiny and a significant competitive advantage”, revealed at the time Mark Reuss, president of GM at a press conference.
Features
The first engine is front-wheel drive and outputs 180 kW (about 245 horsepower), the second offers both-axle drive with 255 kW (347 horsepower), and finally a rear-wheel drive power unit with 62 kW ( 84 horsepower). All three have been manufactured to optimally coexist with the specific transmissions of electrified cars that incorporate the Ultium Drive platform.
The 180 and 255 kW pieces function as permanent magnet synchronous motors specially designed to considerably reduce the dependence on heavy materials extracted from rare earths, while the 62 kW is an induction motor (asynchronous).
Without a doubt, General Motors has placed a large part of the automotive future at the disposal of its power units, which have everything to quickly make themselves felt in the sustainable market.
