The brutal conditions of winter storm that continued to batter most of the United States on Saturday have caused several more deaths.

At least 27 people have died from causes related to extreme weather. The deaths occurred in Oklahoma, Kentucky, Missouri, Tennessee, Wisconsin, Kansas, Nebraska, Ohio, New York, Colorado and Michigan, according to ABC News.

Lake-effect snowfalls downwind of the Great Lakes will continue through Sunday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

Air travel was improving. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said on Twitter that about 20% of Friday’s flights, about 6,000 in total, were cancelled. Air travel was slowly making a comeback, but he urged patience. More than 3,300 flights were canceled in the US on Saturday, according to FlightAware.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul ordered the National Guard to respond to emergencies caused by the bomb cyclone in some areas of the state and the units were heading to the most affected parts of the region.

The governor said that numerous rescues were made overnight in the Buffalo areain some cases with snowplows getting stranded motorists out of their cars and into warming centers.

From Texas to central Florida there are areas that are under a hard frost warning from Saturday night to Sunday.

Rain and freezing rain forecast for Sunday in the Pacific Northwest, including parts of Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. Below zero wind chills will continue across much of the central and northeastern parts of the country.

The storm that the National Weather Service described as “once in a generation” began Thursday and is expected to last through Christmas weekend, eventually covering an area of ​​about 2,000 miles across much of the country.

The danger zone stretched from Canada to Mexico and from Washington state to Florida.
