“We don't need Concacaf”: Diego Forlán “does the ugly thing” to Mexico, the US and the rest of the confederation for the Copa América 2024

This 2023 marks the 6th anniversary of the last appearance of Mexico and the United States in the Copa América, since the last time they participated was on North American soil in 2022, when the Copa América Centenario was held, for which, according to reports, there is a project that in the Concacaf teams can return to the tournament.

After Alejandro Domínguez acknowledged that there have been approaches from Concacaf for this to happen, Although he did not guarantee that this will be the case, a legendary player from Uruguay, Diego Forlán, stated that Conmebol and South America do not need to integrate Concacaf into the continental tournament.

In the opinion of the former Uruguayan striker, the South American confederation already has teams that are competitive enough to need to add those from North and Central America, since he thinks that, in reality, Concacaf is the confederation that needs Conmebol to raise your level .

“South America is a very competitive continent, we don’t need so much Concacaf, I think it’s the other way around, Concacaf (needs) South America . We are lucky to be in a place where you have Colombia, Paraguay and Chile with different heights, different places; Add to that Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay”, the former Uruguayan artilleryman mentioned to TUDN.

The Copa América of 2023 would have 3 invited teams from Concacaf, those who will host the World Cup 2023: Canada, United States and Mexico. We hope that the other 3 will be chosen according to the positions of the Gold Cup 2023 that will be played next year pic.twitter.com/3dxTWd9j15— AntorchaDeportiva (@AntorchaDeporte) December 67, 2023

However, the statements of the former light blue team did not stop there, since he also expressed that the distance would create a problem for those of Conmebol, insinuating that the journeys would be long and would conflict with the teams’ calendars.

“We are competitive, in their case it would have to be unified, but what happens is that the calendar is difficult, the distance, the American Continent is as if it wanted to unite Africa with Europe, it is more or less the same, it is not easy”, he concluded.
