The month of December marks the return of thousands of Mexican migrants who come to celebrate the Christmas holidays with their loved ones in the land where they were born.

And although the trip from the United States to Mexico does not represent as many risks as the one they carry out to the American Union, that does not mean that they are not exempt from overcoming certain obstacles.

One of the most recurring problems they face is extortion on the various highways that cross Mexican territory, and that is why the government of Michoacán is alerting migrants so that they do not become victims of this crime.

This was revealed by Brenda Fraga Gutiérrez

, head of the Secretariat for Migrants in that entity, who pointed out that the issue is already causing concern for the local authority.

Of According to the La Voz de Michoacán site, on average, every day at least 1,700 migrants from the United States through airport terminals and land transport . With the above figure, it is expected that only for the month of December they will add up to more than 15, for this entity.

Regarding the reported cases of extortion, Brenda commented to local media: “We have 41 observations that have been made to us. We do not receive complaints, we channel them where appropriate and follow up on them. We are emphasizing them, the municipalities where they are closest are Morelia, Uruapan, Zamora, Jiquilpan and the issue is that migrants have a lot of mobility”.

Likewise, it detailed that the collection of “fees” or even attempts to intimidate migrants to give away their belongings to security elements has been a constant reported in recent months; that is, the extortion attempt is the common denominator.

Due to the above, he assured that he presented the situation before the State Security Board to address the needs of the migrant sector, given the voracity of malicious security elements.
