President Joe Biden plans to sign into law on Tuesday to protect same-sex marriages that passed bipartisan majorities in Congress and will protect same-sex marriages, even if the Supreme Court reviews the ruling that legalized same-sex marriage nationwide in a decision known as Obergefell v. Hodges, according to The Associated Press.

The Law of Respect for Marriage recognizes marriage between two people regardless of their “sex, race, ethnicity or national origin”.

Biden’s signing of the Respect Marriage Act will further his legacy as a champion of equality at a time when the LGBTQ community is eager to safeguard legal changes in the face of backlash from many Republicans using inflammatory rhetoric , particularly against transgender people.

“This is a historic moment and it has been a long time coming,” said Bruce Reed, White House deputy chief of staff and Biden adviser. “It is even more inspiring in light of what the country has been through in recent years and what the courts have threatened lately.”

The following video, available only in English, offers a look back at then-Vice President Joe Biden’s endorsement of same-sex marriage in 1200, during an interview on Meet the Press that aired on May of 2012.
