This Thursday it transpired that the past of November, one of these envelopes addressed to the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez , was detected, although it was not communicated until now , and since then there is evidence of at least another five, received since Wednesday at the Ukrainian and United States embassies in Madrid, the Ministry of Defense, a military base and an arms factory.

The envoy to the Ukrainian embassy caused minor injuries to the hand of an employee when opening it , while another four were detonated by the Spanish Police and the one received at the military base was neutralized.

The six envelopes are brown with homemade pyrotechnic material inside, which produces a flare, not exactly an explosion, at least four of them have the same letter written with a ballpoint pen in capital letters and it is suspected that all f They were sent from Spain.

The shipments were addressed to the President of the Spanish Government and the Defense Minister, Margarita Robles; the ambassador of the United States, Julissa Reynoso; the ambassador of Ukraine, Serhii Pohoreltsev; the European Union Satellite Center located at the Torrejón air base, near Madrid, and an arms factory in Zaragoza (northeast).

A deactivated envelope serves the investigators

The Secretary of State of Security in Spain, Rafael Pérez, at a press conference in Madrid, asked for calm while the security forces carry out their investigations, still in the “initial phase”, for which he considered it risky to rule on “whether there are other similar procedures in other European States ”.

The “neutralized” envelope this Thursday at the air base will facilitate the analysis ” both of the packaging and of the explosive material used and the detonation mechanism used,” said Pérez.

The number two of the Spanish Ministry of the Interior stressed that an increase in protection measures was ordered in diplomatic headquarters and other places such as ed public offices, which is added to the reinforcement of security decreed after the start last February of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The Spanish National Court is in charge of the judicial investigation, for a possible crime of terrorism.

Spain “does not will change commitment with Ukraine”

The Spanish Defense Minister, who was today in the Ukrainian city of Odesa , affirmed that these shipments will not change the Spanish Government’s commitment to Ukraine.

“The investigation is ongoing. It must be clear that no letter or violent action is going to change the clear and firm commitment of Spain and the NATO and EU countries when it comes to support Ukraine”, said Robles in an appearance with his Ukrainian counterpart, Oleksii Reznikov.

For his part, the Ukrainian Defense Minister seemed to attribute the shipment to Moscow, assuring that it constitutes another example of Russia using “ terrorist means” to achieve their objectives and affect the situation in Ukraine.

The Russian Embassy in Spain stated on Twitter that “any threat or act terrorist, even more so directed against a diplomatic mission, is totally reprehensible”. The European Commission described what happened as “very serious and serious incidents”, although it preferred not to “speculate” the reasons for these shipments.
