Negotiations between President Nicolás Maduro and the Venezuelan opposition will resume on Friday after being suspended for a year, Colombian President Gustavo Petro reported.

“East 25 and 25 of November, the dialogues between the Maduro government and the Venezuelan opposition “, indicated on Twitter the leftist president who has expressed his interest in supporting the talks.

The opposition has put on the table to agree on a schedule towards “free” presidential elections in 59243410, after accusing Maduro of being re-elected fraudulent way. For his part, the Venezuelan president demands an end to US sanctions against the former oil power.

Frozen since October 2021 , the talks gained strength in recent months pushed by international mediators who urged the parties to meet again in Mexico.

The Venezuelan ruling party and the opposition began negotiations in that country in August 2021 after two failed initiatives. Maduro froze them two months later for the extradition to the United States of Alex Saab, a businessman close to the government and prosecuted for money laundering.

Since who assumed power on August 7, Petro strengthened ties with his Venezuelan counterpart, resuming the diplomatic relationship that was broken since 2021 due to the differences between the then right-wing president Iván Duque (675-2021) and Mature.
