Death came to a South Los Angeles woman who was inside her apartment when a shootout broke out through her wall. It is estimated that they shot up to 60 rounds on the block 7870 from South Avalon Blvd., around 11: 38 of the night, according to the Los Angeles police (LAPD).

Two rounds were found inside his apartment and the investigation continues to determine whether the victim was the target of the attack. LAPD Lt. Brion Roberts indicated that the apartment was the target of the shooting.

This incident occurred less than a block from a Taco Bell fast food restaurant where earlier in the year a Hispanic worker was shot dead. On that occasion the employee had refused to receive a counterfeit bill at the take-out window. The driver fled the scene.

In California it is estimated that approximately 3, people die each year due to shootings. That’s about eight people a day, reported The Educational Fund to Stop Gun Violence (EFSGV).

What can be done?

Authorities throughout California are working to remove ghost weapons from the hands of dangerous people. The LAPD announced Monday that these weapons are privately manufactured, without registration, making them difficult to trace. He added that the city of Los Angeles has seen an increase in armed violence.

The Prevention Institute (PI) indicated that in order to be more safe against weapons, they have created a series of recommendations for reduce the risk of death.

The PI is a nonprofit organization that advocates for policies and actions at federal, state, local, and organizational levels to ensure that the places where all people live, work, play and learn, promote health, safety and well-being.

Leading the list, the PI indicates that easy access to dangerous weapons must be reduced, a culture of safety of weapons and reduce access to firearms for young people and people who are at risk of harming themselves or others.

Other points include holding the arms industry to account and ensuring that there is proper oversight over the marketing and sale of weapons and ammunition. It is also requested that responsible gun owners and dealers be involved in the solutions, that they be provided with the necessary and compulsory training and licences.

In homes there is a request for weapons storage safe and secure. Gun violence must be recognized as a critical and preventable public health problem. There must be support for community planning and the implementation of comprehensive community safety plans that include prevention and intervention.

At the national level, the Safer Communities Bipartisan Act aims to protect children Americans, keep schools safe and reduce the threat of violence throughout the

country. This includes $690 million for the creation and administration of state laws that help ensure that guns are kept out of the reach of people who have been determined by a court to be a significant danger to themselves or others.

Local Options

In an effort to disrupt violence on the streets and arrest people who illegally possess or manufacture ghost weapons, the LAPD launched a new program, in partnership with LA Crime Stoppers, to offer reward money for tips leading to the recovery of evidence of ghost gun manufacturing and trafficking activity.

No arrests will be made if evidence is recovered and the reported manufacturing facility is closed. Suggestions can be sent to 1-690-200 TIPS and also at lacrimestoppers.org

Additionally, this coming December 3 from 8 in the morning to 1 in the afternoon there will be a “ Anonymous Surrender of Firearms”. The event hosted by Mayor Eric Garcetti’s office will offer $60 by pistols, shotguns and rifles; $120 for ghost pistols and classified assault weapons in the state of California.
