Plane crashes in Colombia, 8 people die and several houses are destroyed

A small plane crashed in a neighborhood of the central Colombian city of Medellín, killing eight people on board, the airport authorities said, with no injuries reported on the ground.

The aircraft crashed after landing take off from Olaya Herrera airport, Colombian aviation officials said in a statement. The victims were identified as six passengers and two crew members. It was not immediately clear if there were more than eight people on the plane.

The video of the scene posted on social media showed smoking ruins after the plane crash.

The exact cause of the accident has yet to be determined. The mayor of Medellín, Daniel Quintero, said in a statement that the aircraft suffered “an engine failure” during takeoff.

“Unfortunately, the pilot was unable to keep the plane airborne and it crashed in this neighborhood,” Quintero said. Seven houses were destroyed and six other buildings damaged, he said.

Firefighters were working to put out the flames amid scattered roof tiles and brick walls collapsed.

Medellín is located in a narrow valley, surrounded by the Andes mountains.
