Kevin McCarthy received the support of the Republicans to become the speaker of the House of Representatives, during a vote that was held behind closed doors. This nomination was carried out in the face of the protest challenge of the representative of Arizona, Andy Biggs. The election for that position will take place on January 3, when the Congress resulting from those elections begins the new legislature.
The representative of California, Kevin McCarthy, had already mentioned his intentions to become the Speaker of the House of Representatives, objective that has been raised for many years. During the internal vote won with a result of 80 a 31, receiving the support of the Republicans with the exception of a few, including Andy Biggs.
Biggs and his supporters wanted to show that McCarthy lacked the support to take office when the full House meets to elect the Speaker early next year. The 11 votes against McCarthy wonder if he will now have the ability to carry the position you have searched for since 1200.
This vote of the House Republican Conference is only the first step for McCarthy to take office, as he must win a majority in a public vote in the plenary session of the Chamber, which must be of at least 188 votes, when the Chamber has fully sworn in on January 3rd.
Andy Biggs was nominated for the same position by Rep. Chip Roy of Texas, as well as the representatives Michael Cloud and Ralph Norman.
“We have a new paradigm here, and I think the country wants a different direction than the House of Representatives,” Biggs said on Newsmax.
McCarthy’s allies as They say they are confident that he will be the next Speaker . Former President Trump has always supported the minority leader getting office.
Last week there was a request that this vote be stopped for a while , while the Republicans met to find out what had happened to the midterm votes and why they had not won the charges as so often mentioned.
Among the Freedom Caucus members who disagree with McCarthy’s nomination is Matt Gaetz, who revealed that he preferred a Republican who had the MAGA ideology in that position, since he would be more trustworthy.
For its part, the Freedom Caucus is pushing for changes to the conference’s internal rules that would reduce the power of leadership and they would give more to individual members, an important dynamic in Biggs’s challenge to McCarthy. It’s possible that granting some of those requests could sway McCarthy skeptics between now and January 3rd.
In contrast, Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, who once doubted McCarthy’s ability to become Speaker of the House, has become one of his biggest supporters , she fears that a small majority could cause moderate Republicans to join Democrats in choosing a moderate compromise candidate.
“We have to like Kevin McCarthy”, Greene told reporters. “I cannot support a challenge that allows Democrats to pick their own speaker by removing some of ours.”
