Oculus creator proposes to create a virtual reality headset that kills players if they lose in the game

Palmer Luckey, creator of the Oculus virtual reality glasses, announced that it is developing a new model of virtual reality helmet that is capable of killing users if they lose when playing with them .

While the idea may seem far-fetched, it appears that Luckey is honest in his claims to create these potentially deadly lenses for any player.

“Improving the graphics might make games feel more realistic, but only the threat of dire consequences can make a game feel truly real for everyone involved”, Luckey published on his personal blog.

The founder of Oculus explained that the idea stems from combat video games like Sword Art Online, in which if the player’s life points drop to zero, a virtual reality helmet known as “NerveGear” is in charge of bombarding his microwave brain to death.

In the text he commented that he has always been fascinated by the possibility of linking the real lives of players with those of their avatars in video games, so that if the virtual version dies, the same thing happens in real life.

“The idea of linking your real life to your avatar has always fascinated me. It instantly ups the ante and forces you to rethink how you’re going to interact in the virtual world with other players. It is a field that videogames have never explored, although there are a lot of sports in the real world in which you also bet your life”, said the businessman.

He stated that so far they have managed to create a realistic version of the NerveGear capable of killing the user. However, it still remains to ensure that they are capable of responding to what happens in virtual reality

Luckey explained that the virtual reality headset is capable of killing the player thanks to the fact that it has three modules with explosive charges which are connected to a photosensitive sensor. In this way, when the sensor detects that the screen flashes red at a specific frequency, they activate the charges and explode.

“It is not a perfect system, of course. I want to introduce an anti-tamper mechanism that makes it impossible to remove or destroy the helmet. And then there are a wide variety of glitches that can occur and get the player killed at the wrong time. That’s why I haven’t used them myself. I am sure that they should be linked to a high-level artificial intelligence that determines if it is being activated at the correct moment”, he pointed out
