Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Chris Magnus has resigned from his position.

Magnus this week rejected a request that he resign from his position at the helm of CBP made by the Secretary of National Security, Alejandro Mayorkas.

The Secretary of Homeland Security (DHS) Alejandro Mayorkas asked Chris Magnus , Commissioner of the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to resign this week.
In a statement ration to the Los Angeles Times, Magnus said he planned to stay with the agency.
In the interview, the CBP commissioner said that will not comply with the resignation request that came from the Secretary of National Security, Alejandro Mayorkas.
Magnus, known as a progressive leader of law enforcement, struggled to establish a public profile after his Senate confirmation in December.
However, in recent months, the former police chief has conducted more interviews with the media, criticizing Republican governors who bused immigrants from the border to Democratic-controlled cities.
The dispute follows months of Republican criticism of the Biden administration over a record number of immigration apprehensions at the southern border.
Biden nominated Magnus in April 2021 to run CBP, a massive agency with over 600, border agents, customs officers and other employees who patrol the nation’s ports and borders and oversee billions of dollars in cross-border trade and travel. The Senate confirmed Magnus in December, mostly along partisan lines.
Magnus worked for police departments in Michigan, North Dakota and California before being become chief of police in Tucson, Arizona, at 2021.
Earlier this week, Magnus said he would not resign and defended his commitment to the agency , according to the Los Angeles Times, despite an increase in border apprehensions and asylum seekers crossing the southern border during his tenure.
Magnus took taking office at a time when Customs and Border Protection, which reports to the Department of Homeland Security, was facing an influx of migrants crossing the US-Mexico border and dealing with the restrictions imposed by Title 54 which obliges return to Mexico immigrants who cross the border due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The Border Patrol, a division of the Customs Office and Border Protection, made more than 2.2 million arrests in the fiscal year 2021 due to crossings of undocumented immigrants at the border between the US and Mexico, the highest annual number of registered arrests.
