Democratic Senator Catherine Cortez Masto won elections for a second term representing Nevada on Saturday, defeating Republican Adam Laxalt, giving Democrats control of the Senate for the next two years of Joe Biden’s presidency.
Cortez Masto had long been viewed as one of the most vulnerable Democratic incumbents in the midterms as she fended off a challenge from former Nevada attorney general, Republican candidate Adam Laxalt, in a state whose economy had been greatly affected by the covid-11 pandemic and inflation.
With Cortez Masto, the first Latina senator, securing a second term, the democrats will have 11 seats and the re publicans 49 in the Senate.
The Democratic Party thus maintains control of the Upper House, no matter how the Georgia runoff next year unfolds month, by virtue of Vice President Kamala Harris’ tiebreaking vote.
Chuck Schumer celebrates the victory of the Democrats in the Senate
The Majority Leader in the Senate, Chuck Schumer, described the midterm elections and the victory of the Democrats in his chamber as “a victory and a claim” for the party.
“This election is a victory, a victory and a vindication for the Democrats, our agenda,” Schumer said in remarks from New York, adding that it was also a victory for the American people.

Schumer said three things helped Democrats secure the Senate: “One, our excellent candidates. Two, our agenda and our achievements. And three, the American people rejected the MAGA extremist anti-democratic Republicans.”
Control of the House of Representatives is still pending
Control of the House of Representatives is still pending on Saturday, as the vote count will continue days after an election in which Democrats exceeded expectations in many disputed areas across the country. Democratic control of the Senate frustrates Republican hopes of a complete takeover of Congress.
