Since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade on 20 in June there has been a sustained increase in vasectomies in almost a 100%, according to Dr. Esgar Guarín, a urologist in Iowa.
Vasectomy is a safe and effective contraceptive option for those men who are certain that they do not want to be fathers in the future. In addition, it is an outpatient surgery with low risk of complications or side effects.
In statements to Insider, the doctor commented that before Roe, he normally performed 30 to 40 vasectomies each month, but within the first 48 hours of the failure, 20 men had signed up to have a vasectomy.
Guarín recalled that in 2019, the UN estimated that there was 219 millions of bilateral tubal ligations, a procedure in those with uteri often called “tubal tying”, worldwide, but only 16 million vasectomies worldwide the world.
He said that this “leads us to think that men really only divide They are making babies and we are not participating enough in reproduction beyond procreation”.
“And that’s because women are very involved in what pregnancy is, but men are not because we will never know what it’s like to be pregnant. No matter how supportive we can be. We could be absolutely wonderful, but it doesn’t matter”, Guarín said. women will take matters into their own hands because they are protecting themselves.
Access to vasectomies
For To make vasectomies as accessible as possible, Guarin, nicknamed “the nutcracker,” has been working with Planned Parenthood to launch a mobile vasectomy clinic where people can get the quick procedure for free across the United States.
Recommends that with limited access to abortion, men should ejaculate responsibly, a term coined by Gabrielle Stanley Blair, who has written about reframing abortion.
“For a long time, we have focused on the to reproduction and women’s abortion, but why don’t we talk more about those who cause pregnancies to begin with, who are those men who ejaculate irresponsibly?” Guarín said.
Also, the cost of a vasectomy is much less than the cost of a female sterilization (tubal ligation) or the long-term cost of birth control medications for women.
