While federal emergency management officials launched their largest search and rescue effort, the number of deaths after Hurricane Ian’s passage increased to 87 on Sunday, according to NBC News.
However, due to the great disaster left by the hurricane and difficult access to devastated areas, the number is expected to continue to rise as additional deaths are investigated for possible links to last week’s storm .
Until now, deaths include 83 in Florida, where Ian struck Wednesday as a Category 4 hurricane and four in North Carolina, where the storm ended after hitting the Carolina coast South on Friday.
The White House announced Saturday night that the Bidens will visit Puerto Rico on Monday and Florida on Wednesday.
Search and rescue efforts were underway, and the head of the Federal Emergency Management Administration, Deanne Criswell, told “Fox News Sunday” that the US response is likely unprecedented.
Urban search and rescue teams from FEMA, the Coast Guard, the Department of the Interior and Department of Defense will work with Florida officials to search for people who are still missing after Hurricane Ian caused catastrophic flooding , according to Criswell.
At least 1 have been made,100 rescues in Florida since the storm hit, Governor Ron DeSantis said at a press conference on Saturday.
