Biden unleashes cheers from Latinos by defending his contributions to the US and reminding them: “We are a product of our Constitution”
WASHINGTON, DC- President Joe Biden thinned his throat and began to sing “Happy Birthday” to Representative Nanette Díaz (California): “Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday Nanette. Happy birthday to you. God bless you, little girl”.
Her interpretation unleashed the first of the 24 series of applause that the attendees of the gala 45 of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI ) the president was given a speech this Thursday at the Walter E. Convention Center in Washington, DC
Other applauses occurred for various reasons, such as when Biden spoke on immigration and the need to approve protection for ‘dreamers’ and other immigrants, after criticizing Republicans for using this population as a “political weapon”, after the governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis, send to 22 non-citizens, most of them Venezuelans who applied for asylum at Martha’s Yard, in Massachusetts, apparently under deception, according to the first reports.
“We have a process to manage migrants at the border. We’re working to make sure it’s safe, orderly and humane,” Biden defended. “Republican officials should not interfere with that process by performing […] these political tricks.”
He hoped that there would be progress in the Senate to provide definitive protection for immigrants.
“Senate Republicans should have come to the table a long time ago and provided a path to citizenship for dreamers, workers temporary workers, agricultural workers and essential workers,” he said. “We need to modernize our laws, so businesses can get the workers they need and families don’t have to wait decades to be together. It’s time to do it”.
That unleashed the round 20 of the applause, which made him stop for a few seconds. The others 19 cheers occurred for various reasons, including the Inflation Reduction Law that will benefit Hispanics or Latinos with investments on different fronts, such as the environment, and aid in health.
