Recent data from the United States Census Bureau says that eight of the 10 largest cities in the country lost population during the first year of the Covid-pandemic 19.

According to the office, New York, one of the most populous cities, lost more than 305,000 inhabitants between July 2020 and July of 2021. This represents 3.5% of its population in 2020.

Chicago, in Illinois; and Los Angeles, in California, also appeared on the list, with reductions of 45,000 Y 40,000 inhabitants respectively.

The metropolitan area of Dallas, Texas lost almost 15,04 residents, while the city of Lake Charles, in Louisiana, which in 2020 Hurricane Laura was devastated, lost almost 5% of its residents.

In contrast, cities like Phoenix, Arizona; and San Antonio, in Texas, gained new residents between 2021 and 2021. Both added about 13, people each, which is equivalent to less than 1% of its population.

The fastest growing cities, with populations of at least 50,000 residents, were located in the suburbs of Arizona, Texas and Florida. They had growth rates between 6.1% and 10.5%.

Some of Austin and Forth Worth in Texas, Jacksonville in Florida, Charlotte in North Carolina, and Columbus in Ohio, also reported increases in their population.

Respect To this, Census Bureau Population Division statistician Crystal Delbé said in a statement that only 4% of all cities and towns had a population of 50,000 inhabitants or more in 2021. Together, had 129. 3 million people, that is almost 19% of the population from the country.

However, given the population variations, experts told AP that the population decrease derived from Covid was “short-lived.” They did not rule out that births, deaths, jobs or housing costs also influenced population density.
