WASHINGTON – Vice President Kamala Harris said Tuesday that the country’s leaders must have the courage to act to end the shootings, after the deaths of at least 19 students and a teacher in a shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas.

“Every time a tragedy like this happens, our hearts are broken and our broken hearts are nothing compared to the broken hearts of those families, yet it keeps happening,” Harris said, her voice breaking.

“Enough is enough, as a nation we must have the courage to act and understand the nexus of what constitutes reasonable and sensible public policy”, said Harris in a speech during the annual gala of the Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies.

Visibly affected, Harris pointed out that every time a tragedy like this happens it is disheartening, but, he stressed, this is nothing compared to the trance that the families of the victims go through.

“And, even so, it continues to happen”, lamented the vice president.

According to data provided by the authorities, the aggressor, identified as Salvador Ramos, from 18 years old, broke into Robb Elementary School in Uvalde on Tuesday with a handgun, and possibly a rifle, about 83 miles (133 kilometers) from San Antonio.

The governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, explained in a press conference that Ramos, a resident of Uvalde, “horribly and incomprehensibly shot and killed 14 students and a teacher” and who was later shot down by the police.

The balance of this tragedy reached on Tuesday night the number of 19 dead children , in addition to the deaths of a teacher and the shooter’s grandmother.
