A chihuahua puppy is saved with surgery after being injured in the neck by an arrow in Riverside County

A chihuahua puppy was injured in the neck by an arrow in Desert Hot Springs, in Riverside County, requiring emergency surgery Monday that veterinarians believe will save his life.

The 4-month-old female was found early Monday morning by a woman on the block 15500 of Avenida Florencita, near Camino Campanero, according to the Riverside County Department of Animal Services.

Agency spokesman John Welsh reported that the resident, whose identity was not released, was awakened by the pup’s howling and immediately went outside to see what it was .

The person found the chihuahua dog with an arrow that had pierced her neck directly .

“For someone to intentionally shoot this poor puppy with an arrow is disgusting. We are shocked and hope that someone can provide us with information on who did this. In the meantime, we will continue to treat this puppy,” said Animal Services Director Erin Gettis.

The little animal was turned over to a sheriff, who in turn turned him over to an animal control officer, after which was transferred to the Coachella Valley Animal Campus in Thousand Palms for extraction surgery of the arrow, according to Welsh.

The spokesman said that, Surprisingly, the bullet did not damage the puppy’s vital arteries .

“She is such a sweet puppy. I can’t imagine why anyone would do such a terrible thing to such an innocent creature. It is very sick”, said the veterinary technician Emily Ellison, who is caring for the dog.

The director of Animal Services said that the chihuahua puppy, pending recovery, will eventually be put up for adoption.

In the meantime, authorities ask anyone with information about the act of cruelty against the puppy to contact the Department of Animal Services at 951-358-7387.
