Given a poor prospect of improvement in drought conditions, California Natural Resources officials urged residents to take care of the water before the hottest months to come.

As of 1 June, area outdoor watering restrictions will go into effect in Los Angeles County.

According to state figures, The first three months of the year were the driest in California’s recorded history, a state that is currently in the third year of a severe drought.

“We are experiencing changes in conditions due to higher temperatures in the winter and then higher temperatures in the spring and summer ”, said the secretary of Natural Resources of California, Wade Crowfoot, in an interview with the ABC network.

“What that means less snow on the mountains, which provide our water supply. And then more of that falling snow cover is absorbed into very dry soils or evaporates into warm air,” he added.

According to the Secretary of Natural Resources, the drought is getting worse in the state.

Crawfoot mentioned that California has not gotten to the point where state authorities have to impose restrictions on the use of water, but wants everyone to know the reasons why residents are being asked to conserve the resource.

In Los Angeles there are favorable figures regarding the reduction of water use.

“We have done such a good job in the city of Los Angeles that we have re duced by 20% our water consumption. We went from 50% of residential water use for irrigation to 35%”, said the city’s mayor, Eric Garcetti.

“So, as long as we keep hitting those benchmarks, we should be able to overcome even the continuing drought in the future”, added the mayor.

The request made by officials to conserve water arrive before the warmer months of the year, which are yet to come.
