The President of the United States, Joe Biden, stated that his country and South Korea “are prepared for anything South Korea does North”, given the indications that Pyongyang is preparing a new nuclear or ballistic missile test imminently.
Biden spoke in this way when asked during an event held this Sunday in Seoul about the possibility that the regime led by Kim Jong-un carried out a weapons test during his visit to South Korea .
“I’m not worried, if that’s your question,” Biden said during his speech to the media at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Seoul, where he held a meeting with the president of the Hyundai Motor group, Chung Eui-sun, to discuss new investments by the South Korean firm in the United States.
On the eve, Biden committed to strengthening the deterrence capacity of Washington and Seoul on the Korean peninsula and stated that a summit with the North Korean leader could be possible if he is “sincere” about resuming the dialogue on disarmament.
During the meeting held in Seoul with his South Korean counterpart, Yoon Suk-yeol, both leaders issued a joint statement reaffirming the US commitment “To deploy strategic military assets” on the Korean peninsula “in a timely and coordinated manner as necessary.”
Despite repeated gestures by Washington and Beijing to reach out to Pyongyang in the face of a reopening of the dialogue on denuclearization without preconditions, the North has not shown in the last two years any interest in resuming talks.
What’s more, after approving last year a modernization plan weapons, the regime has carried out a record number of missile launches est e year and, as confirmed by the South Korean and US intelligence services, it is ready to carry out its first nuclear test since 2017.
Seoul and Washington have even stated in recent days that North Korea plans a launch ” imminent” of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) coinciding with Biden’s visit to South Korea, which takes place between last Friday and this Sunday, when he will travel to Japan.
