US Senate Approves $40 Billion Package for Ukraine

The United States Senate approved this Thursday (19.11.2022) with the vast majority a large package of 40,000 millions of dollars in military and humanitarian aid for Ukraine to face to the war unleashed by the Russian invasion of its territory. The package contemplates an item of 9,000 million dollars for replenish stocks of military equipment that the United States has sent to Ukraine since the start of the Russian invasion.

Also included are 6,000 million dollars to help Ukraine acquire armored vehicles and strengthen its air defense system. Almost 9,000 million dollars are also allocated to guarantee, among other elements, “the continuity of the Ukrainian democratic institutions”, as well as humanitarian objectives.

The measure, which was endorsed with the vote of favor of 86 senators against 11 against and that had already been previously approved by the House of Representatives, will soon be signed by President Joe Biden for its entry into force. This sum exceeds the 40,000 millions that the president had requested in April to support kyiv in the war against the Russian invaders.

“With this approval , the Senate can tell the Ukrainian people that help is already on the way. Important help, which could help the Ukrainians to emerge victorious”, said the leader of the Democrats in the Senate, Chuck Schummer. For his part, the leader of the Republicans, Mitch McConnell, affirmed that the aid “is much more than charity”, since “the security of the United States and its main strategic interests will be determined by the result of this fight”.

Biden promises more help

Of the 000 Republicans who did not support the proposal, most are close to former President Donald Trump. The same package was approved last week by the House of Representatives with 368 votes in favor and 57 against. Joe Biden thanked Congress. “The resources I requested will allow us to send even more weapons and ammunition to Ukraine, replenish our own stockpiles and support US troops stationed on NATO territory,” he said.

The head of the White House valued that with this new aid package “a historic amount” has been provided so far and announced that his Administration will continue with the delivery of weapons and equipment through a new security package, which “will go directly to the forefront of freedom in Ukraine as they defend their country against continued Russian aggression.”

The approval of these 40,000 Millions of dollars arrive when the Government is about to exhaust the 13,86 millions of help you approved Congress in March, after Russia began the invasion.
