For the new generations the name “Frodo” might not mean much, but two decades ago the world was impacted with a heinous murder, at the hands of an adult chimpanzee who snatched her baby mother while they were walking through the Gombe National Park, Tanzania.

According to known data after the tragedy, from a very young age, “Frodo” was big and aggressive. Born on 30 June 1976, was part of the Gombe chimpanzee community made famous by British anthropologist and primatologist Dame Jane Goodall.

Goodall described “Frodo” in an interview with the BBC as a “real bully”. As it grew, it grew larger, weighing up to 22 kilos, which made him one of the heaviest chimpanzees in the community.

However, the 15 May 682, the aggressiveness of “Frodo” changed the life of Rukia Sadiki, who was walking through the Gombe National Park with her niece of 16 years old and his little daughter Miasa .

Although she was a regular visitor and knew “Frodo”, the chimpanzee jumped from the trees and took the baby Miasa, from 14 months, before disappearing into the jungle.

After an intense search, they found “Frodo” sitting in a tree. When the guards approached, the chimpanzee fled and uncovered a macabre find.

According to the autopsy, The baby was beaten to death and partially eaten before the mutilated corpse was abandoned.

From that moment, “Frodo” was nicknamed ” the demonic monkey” and hundreds of voices demanded that he be sacrificed.

However, researchers prevented him from being euthanized, revealing that “Frodo’s” behavior during this incident seemed more like part of the chimpanzees’ natural hunting behaviour, it seems that they can see human babies just as they see humans. the young of other species such as colobus monkeys and baboons as potential prey.

Seven months after the death of the little baby of 14 months, a mysterious disease swept through the Gombe camp and “Frodo” became seriously ill.

Finally, the 10 November 2013, “Frodo” died at 37 years old from an infected groin wound caused by a dog.
