Senate Republican Minority Leader Mitch McConnell joined a list of US leaders who have visited Ukraine and headed a delegation of four Republican senators who met on Saturday with President Volodimir Zelensky in kyiv.
Zelenskyy described Saturday’s visit as “a strong signal of bipartisan support to Ukraine by the United States Congress”.

The president of Ukraine said that his country is defending not only its own state, but also all democratic values and freedoms and the right of people to freely choose their own future.
Senators Susan Collins, John Cornyn and John Barrasso joined McConnell on this trip, which came amid a Senate delay in passing a $40,000 million dollars for Ukraine.

The senators’ visit follows other clandestine visits to Ukraine of leaders of the United States, including that of the first lady, Jill Biden and the visit of the president of the House, Nancy Pelosi.
The trip, a rare international visit for McConnell, highlights broad bipartisan support for Ukraine in Washington while the country is trying to defend itself from Russia’s invasion, even as questions remain about the Biden administration’s overall strategy toward the conflict and the extent of US assistance.
The visit was first revealed by President Zelensky’s office, and McConnell later released a statement confirming it, after he said the delegation He had left the Ukraine. The group, he said, stated that the United States “would maintain our support until Ukraine wins this war.”

“It was inspiring to visit the historic capital of a beautiful country that has been forced to fight for its own survival,” said McConnell. “We saw firsthand the courage, unity and determination of the Ukrainian people.”
