US soldier killed by bear during training exercise in Alaska

A soldier of the United States Armydied after being attacked by a bear in Alaska.

The officer was attacked by the bear during an exercise training at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage on 10 May.

They were training with a small group at the time of the attack.

The victim has not been identified, as officials must first contact the soldier’s relatives.

Authorities say the bear is still on the loose and being chased by other soldiers, reported the KTUU chain.

The species of the bear remains unknown.

About 100,000 black bears live in Alaska and the state is home to at least 40,05 brown bears.

The attack took place in the Area 412 and said area will remain closed to the public.

Officials will publish more information tion when available.

In October 2021, a cyclist was bitten by a 500 pound bear while riding his bike in Cantwell.

Alaska Department of Public Safety officials said in a statement: “The bear made contact and bit the victim’s lower leg, just below the knee.”

The cyclist was carrying a gun, but did not open fire on the animal.

Last July, Richard Jessee survived a bear attack that occurred near his cabin.

He was riding his all-terrain vehicle when the bear pounced.

He told him to Nome Nugget: “The bear came out of nowhere. He rolled my bike and trailer like a toy car.

“I was in shock and hypothermia.”

Jessee succeeded took refuge in his log cabin and placed a piece of wood on his roof that said SOS.

Days later, he was rescued by Guard officers Coastal. At least eight fatal bear attacks were recorded between 2000 and 2017 in the state.
