The demining of the entire Ukrainian territory, after the Russian invasion, will take between five and ten years, assured Oleh Bondar , head of the Department of Humanitarian Demining of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, informed the local agency Ukraine-Ukrinform.

“According to international experience, mine removal can take from 5 to 10 years”, specified Bondar, for whom one of the greatest negative consequences of the Russian invasion of Ukraine is the massive contamination of its territory and populated localities by explosives, including those prohibited by international conventions.

Bondar clarified that the Russian army used remotely controlled mine systems , placed minefields in populated localities and left behind a large quantity of explosive devices.

The latter are, in his opinion, especially dangerous and were placed in a specific way

to represent a threat and a danger deadly for civilians.

“These mines and ammunition have been discovered in the kyiv, Chernigov, Kharkov, Sumy, Mykolaiv, Zaporizhia, Dnipro, Donetsk and Lugansk”, he added, which represents a large part of the Ukrainian territory.

The total number of mines, cluster munitions and devices specially installed explosives represents approximately the % of all explosive devices detected and neutralized so far.

According to the expert, after the Ukrainian Armed Forces liberated towns and villages, se are taking priority actions on demining, including inspections of localities, roads and buildings, work of emergency teams on power lines, gas and water pipes.

“Currently, the implementation of these measures has allowed us to start a scheduled process of inspection and demining of agricultural land. We do everything possible so that agricultural companies can carry out the spring sowing campaign”, insisted Bondar. EFE
