Three American tourists died at a resort in the Bahamas after becoming ill, officials from the Atlantic island nation confirmed, and another was airlifted to a hospital for treatment. .

The Acting Prime Minister of the Bahamas, Chester Cooper , issued a statement Friday saying police are investigating and the cause of the deaths is unknown, although “no crime is suspected.”

Their identities were not initially made public, but the Royal Bahamas Police Force issued a statement indicating that they were investigating the deaths of two men and one woman.

Health Minister Dr. Michael Darville told Eyewitness News Bahamas on Saturday that some hotel guests went to a clinic on Thursday with nausea and vomiting, they were treated and left. Three were found dead later. A fourth person was airlifted to a hospital in New Providence.

Environmental health scientists, doctors, and others were investigating to make sure there was no public health hazard. “We feel like what we’re seeing is an isolated case associated with a particular area,” Darville said, adding that investigators are doing blood and toxicology tests to help determine the cause of the illness.

The Chief of Communications for the Prime Minister’s Office, Latrae L. Rahming, tweeted that the deaths occurred at the Sandals Emerald Bay resort in Great Exuma.

In a statement, a Sandals representative confirmed the deaths and said the company was “actively working to support both the investigation and the families of the guests in any way possible.”
