Throughout the United States, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) provides a subsidy for the purchase of food to the most needy people or households . This program is directed by the state agencies that are in charge of receiving the applications and applying the corresponding eligibility criteria and also administer the funds from the federal government, specifically those that the Department of Agriculture allocates for this initiative.

In its early years, under another name, this program was managed through coupons that were delivered to the beneficiaries. Currently, such coupons have been replaced by an EBT card (Eelectronic Benefit Transfer) where the subsidy is deposited so that the beneficiaries can buy food in associated stores, something that has made it even more popular, but which has also raised doubts and problems regarding the application and use of benefits.

What are What are the main drawbacks you may face when applying for SNAP?

The main problem that can arise when applying for benefits from the SNAP program in the United States is not meeting the corresponding income limit . As it is an aid program aimed at the most needy, it requires applicants to meet the pre-established criteria of having income that is equal to or less than 80% of the federal poverty level. In this sense, all those applicants who are above the standard set by the federal government do not receive the benefit.

Other problems may occur at the same time:

one. Missed In-Person or Phone Interview: As with other low-income assistance programs, the SNAP Program requires that applicants, after enrolling, submit to an interview. The loss of said interview may derive in not obtaining the benefits.

two. Falsification of documents or data: State agencies that grant the benefit corresponding to the SNAP program can invalidate an application if they discover that the information provided is erroneous or has been falsified.

3. Proof of Citizenship: The absence of proof of citizenship or, failing that, legal status in the United States may represent a barrier to obtaining benefits from the SNAP program. However, according to Getting SNAP it is recommended to call 1.800.645.8333 to check eligibility in these cases.

Location of residence may also affect a SNAP application. As the state agencies are in charge of processing these requests, they only accept those introduced by residents of the same state, as long as they can prove it through some documents.

After obtaining the benefit of the SNAP program, people may present other problems such as doubts regarding card activation or card blocking. Such inconveniences can be easily resolved by calling the number on the back of the card, which can also be very useful to check the credit balance.
