Facebook announced that it plans to close its podcast service almost a year after it was launched on the market. The company hopes that the service will stop being online as of June 3.
This decision puts an end to a function that had been presented in April 2021 and with which Facebook hoped to enter the podcast business, a sector that has industry giants such as Google and Spotify.
The platform also intended to compete with applications such as Clubhouse, which at the time became one of the most downloaded apps by users of iOS devices since it allowed them to participate in group chat rooms with hundreds of people.
According to information published by Bloomberg Facebook informed its partners that it will stop allowing users to upload podcasts to the service starting this week. As part of the decisions made by the social network, they will also remove Soundbites and their central audio hub in a degree shift in business model in which they had been working.
One of the reasons that explains this change in the company’s position is that the interest in this type of content has been decreasing in the last year. This means that it is no longer seen as an attractive enough business to continue making investments.
“After a year of learning and iterating on the first audio experiences, we decided to simplify our set of audio tools on Facebook. We constantly evaluate the features we offer so we can focus on the most meaningful experiences,” he commented for The Verge Facebook spokeswoman Adelaide Coronado.
Facebook was not the only company trying to take advantage of the podcast boom because other large companies such as Amazon and SiriusXM also made large investments to position themselves in the market. To do this, they bought several podcast networks in what became a frenzy of acquisitions.
According to the information that has transpired, Facebook is not expected to carry out a official announcement to the public to publicize the cessation of operations of its podcast service.
