Chivas de Guadalajara and Pumas de la UNAM they will face each other again in a direct eliminatory, with the peculiarity of being played in the playoff of the Liga MX, although the balance has tipped for the university team and in the last two clashes they have won the championship.
Both teams have faced each other five times in direct elimination duels, where the Pumas have transcended in three of them and the herd in two occasions; however, in this edition both teams have very different presents than the previous crosses.
The first time that both teams faced each other was in the season 1980-1981 , where the Pumas transcended in that key, becoming champion of that edition. Two years later, there was a rematch where the Chivas advanced to the next phase.
20 years later, the herd and the university students met again in the definition of the Closing Tournament 2004, after a well-remembered penalty shootout where Rafael Medina ended up missing the decisive penalty to seek the championship, consecrating the Pumas with the title.
Four years later, Chivas and Pumas met in the tournament of Winter, with the rojiblanco team qualifying for the next round. Three years later, the Pumas advanced in the bracket they faced against Guadalajara in the Clausura 2004, where the university students became champions.
The playoff duel will be held at the Akron Stadium in Guadalajara, due to the position in which the Chivas, next Sunday, May 8, in addition, Pumas from UNAM will seek their title continental next Wednesday against the Seattle Sounders of the United States.
