Hertz, the American car rental company, will face 100 new claims from clients who were the victims of wrongful arrests.
Among the cases, that of stands out, a couple who was detained and arrested, Gunpoint, on the charge of vehicle theft, after renting a Ford Mustang, at George Bush Intercontinental Airport, Houston, Texas. According to the testimony, the couple told the police that the vehicle had not been stolen and they showed him the rental papers.
“We were stunned when the police said that the license plate on our car belonged to another that was reported stolen…We are furious that something like this can happen and shocked to learn that Hertz has previously rented ‘stolen’ cars to customers, ”the couple wrote in a legal statement, which is collected by Fox Business.
Another case is that of a music video director, from New York City, who rented a Nissan Versa 2019, at LAX Marriott Hotel in California. While on his way to work he was stopped and arrested, in Hollywood, for 10 Security elements.
In his legal statement the director said that Hertz rented him “the wrong car” and later, without prior investigation, reported it as stolen . Although he was eventually released by the cops, he had an embarrassing moment in Hollywood in the eyes of bystanders, losing about $20,000 dollars from the production of the music video and airfare.
So far the US company faces a broad demand for 230 cases in Delaware bankruptcy court, seeking damages in excess of $750, ,000 of dollars.
Hertz, who presents more than 3,000 police reports a year, has said that most of the claims are from customers who are weeks or months late in returning vehicles and lost communication with them after the delivery due date.
On the other hand, Lawmakers in Congress have asked the Federal Trade Commission to investigate reports of company thefts.
