A girl was seriously injured in a coyote attack on a Southern California beach Thursday night, police said.
The attack occurred just north of the Huntington Beach Pier, on the same beach, around 9: 45 pm, according to Huntington Beach Police.
The girl was taken to a hospital with serious injuries, but is expected to survive.
“There was like a coyote around here, we saw it, and then all of a sudden it went through this family,” witness Garie Joncon told CBS Los Angeles. “And there was, like, a kid on the ground. And then, like five minutes later, we walk back, the whole crowd around a baby. The baby evidently received a bite and only had blood all over his face.”
Cameras captured footage of the coyote running across the beach, reported CBS Los Angeles.
The officers chased him down the beach, but were unable to capture him. The coyote has been on the loose since Friday morning.
Police are working with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife to track him down. Once he is captured, he will be euthanized, police said.
Police said efforts to catch coyotes have intensified in recent years. weeks throughout the city. Last year, CBS Los Angeles reported that a pack of 12 coyotes attacked a woman and her dog in Woodland Hills, California.
