Tennis legend Boris Becker sentenced to two years and six months in prison for financial crimes

The legendary German former tennis player Boris Becker, winner of six Grand Slam tournaments, was sentenced this Friday by a British court to two years and six months in prison for four financial crimes related to his bankruptcy in 2017.

The sentence is known after last April 8 the jury of Southwark Court, in London, found him guilty of those crimes, committed between 21 June and October 3 of 2017.

The jury considered it proven that the former number one in the world hid assets and loans worth about 2.5 million pounds (more than $3 million dollars) to avoid paying its debts, which amount to about 50 million pounds (60 millions of dollars).

Tennis legend Boris Becker was found guilty of illicitly transferring thousands of dollars from a cue bankrupt after declaring bankruptcy and could face several years in prison, the AP reported.

A Southwark Crown Court in London, England, found Becker guilty of four counts under the Insolvency Act including extraction of assets, concealment of debts and two counts of non-disclosure of assets.

The former German tennis player transferred thousands of dollars after declaring bankruptcy in June 2017 from his business account to other accounts, among which is that of his ex-wife Barbará and his other ex-wife Sharlely Becker.

The six-time Grand Slam champion had denied all charges and stated that he had cooperated with trust officers to secure your assets, such as your ring of boas, and that you followed the advice of an expert.

Becker’s bankruptcy was due to a loan of $5.0 mi million dollars from a private bank in 2013. In addition to a loan of around 1.6 million dollars from a British businessman the following year, according to testimonies at the trial.

Becker, of 54 years old, said at trial that about $50 million dollars that he received throughout his career were exhausted due to his divorce payments and the debts that arose after retiring.
