When trying to identify the problems that can cause the breakdown of a car’s oil pump, it is essential that we know the types of faults that can be may be developing and what are the reasons that have caused it.

The first indication that will help us identify a possible fault in the pump or in the engine oil apparatus is the indicative of engine light that cars have on the instrument panel.

This light will turn on on our dashboard when there is a problem pressure or flow indicator and it will turn red. If the fault is serious, the engine fault light will also illuminate.

When a car is losing oil due to some fault, it is likely that it can be detected by the characteristics of the smoke that comes out of the exhaust system.

How to know if the oil pump has pressure faults ?

This fault can be caused by air leaking or entering the gear circuit, excess oil in the crankcase, clearances produced by wear in the engine components. It can also be a valve failure.

If we want to know if the problem is a pressure problem, we must do the following:

  • Make sure that the crankcase is in good condition. To do this we must check the oil level and check the dipstick to see if the level is adequate.
  • Check that the motor is driving the pump when it is turned on and that its indicators work properly. For this, the pressure of the engine block must be checked manually.
  • Check the placement and functions of the pump. For this we must observe the pump shaft and check that the intermediate between the shaft and the distributor are in good condition. It should also be examined if there are any loose screws or traces of oil in the surroundings in the placement of the pump.
  • Remove the casing and make sure that there are no metallic particles in the suction module of the pump.
  • Lubricating oil is the blood for your engine, that’s why you should always choose a good quality one and not put the life of your engine at risk. your car.

How to check if there are particles in the gear circuit that affect the pump?

It is very possible that the gear circuit becomes clogged and this leads to a failure in the oil pump. This could happen due to the presence of foreign particles that prevent the oil from flowing correctly and reaching each of the parts of the engine.

This fault is usually caused by the wear of other elements and could happen for these reasons:

  • Deterioration of the valve seals
  • Nylon timing gear wear
  • Damaged tappets
  • Damaged joint sealant
  • Worn oil filter
  • 3979023

In general, an oil pump does not usually fail unless the elements associated with it are faulty.
