A bill in Tennessee would require drunk drivers to be sentenced to pay child support to minors in case they participate in an accident where one of the parents died.
Payments would continue until the child turns 18 years old or have graduated from high school, depending on the bill.
A spokesman for Gov. Bill Lee told ABC News he will review legislation when it reaches your desk. The bill passed unanimously in the House of Representatives and the State Senate.
“As promised, I will do whatever it takes to protect the future of our most valuable resource, our children. I am proud of our leadership, both in the House and Senate, in pushing this bill to the point where it is headed to our Governor Bill Lee for his signature,” said Rep. Mike Hall, praising the bill. .

“Tennesseans care about each other and we will do everything in our power to hold accountable the people who chose to do harm,” he added.
The bill leaves it up to the court to determine the appropriate amount of money that convicted drunk drivers would have to pay taking into account the financial needs and resources of the child, the resources and needs of the surviving parent or guardian of the child and standard of living to which the child is accustomed.
Drivers who are incarcerated and unable to make payments have up to one year after of your release to start paying.
