The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, published in the Official Gazette of the Federation the reforms to the Mining Law establishing the nationalization of lithium.
“I am very happy because lithium was nationalized, which is a strategic mineral, which means the future of industries and technology, which is going to be used in the world that was achieved, we faced all the obstacles”, he said.
In his morning conference from the National Palace, the Mexican president assured that with this reform to the Mining Law it is established that no government foreigner seizes Mexican lithium.
“I want to send my thanks to the deputy legislators , senators, who supported the mining reform so that lithium is property of the nation and that no abuse is committed, that no foreign country, a company, and no corporation foreign wants to appropriate what which belongs to the people of Mexico“, he expressed.
“The lithium thing (its approval) was already a complement, something that will also give us a lot of peace of mind because they do not know the pressures of lithium, because of lithium, and here we solved it without a problem”, he expressed.
The publication of the Law Mining in the Official Gazette of the Federation, which modifies articles 1, 5, 9 and 10 , occurs after the Senate of the Republic of Mexico approved this Tuesday 19 of April 2022 the opinion.
“With 87 votes in favor, 20 against and 16 abstentions, it is approved in general and the non-reserved articles of the opinion that amends various provisions of the Mining Law regarding the exploration and exploitation of lithium”, said the president of the Mexican Senate, Olga Sánchez Cordero, after the vote.
Before being approved this d opinion in the Senate, the Mining Law was approved in the Chamber of Deputies last Monday 18 April 2022 with the majority of legislators made up of the ruling National Regeneration Movement (MORENA) party, the Labor Party (PT) and the Green Ecologist Party of Mexico (PVEM), in addition to the support of legislators from Movimiento Ciudadano (MC).
“With 298 votes in favor, zero in against and 197 abstentions, the initiative sent by the head of the Federal Executive this Sunday was endorsed 17 of April, for which the paperwork was waived”, reported the Chamber of Deputies in a statement.
The decree amending and adding various provisions of the Mining Law of Mexico establishes in its “Article 5 Bis” that: “Lithium is declared to be of public utility, therefore no concessions, license s, contracts, permits or authorizations in the matter . Those in which there are lithium deposits will be considered mining reserve areas”.
This same “Article 5 Bis” also establishes that lithium is the nation’s heritage and its exploration and exploitation will be in favor of the people of Mexico.
“It is recognized that Lithium is the patrimony of the Nation and its exploration, exploitation, benefit and use is reserved in favor of the people of Mexico”, states Article 5 Bis .
With the publication in the Official Gazette of the Federation, the reforms to the Mining Law, proposed by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, will enter into effective from this Thursday 21 of April 2022.
